Planetes

So here I am with another 'warmup' digital painting. I still don't feel like I'm all that great but painting straight into GIMP via my wacom, for the first time, managed to feel so damn natural.

So I've been watching me some planetes. Amazing anime that manages to avoid the normal hard-sci-fi pitfall of having absolute shit characters. In fact, I've had a few eh... touchy moments over their regrets and dreams as I watched. Really moving story... somehow.

Anyway, this is my bit of fanart. A spacesuit in Planetes' own utility/high-visibility orange with those inexplicable red/green lenses I assume have something to do with the suit's avionics systems. The flat surface at the back of the head and shoulders accommodates a 'suitport' that can be docked directly to another hull and allow the astronaut to pull themselves through the opening into the other cabin. Not my idea, but I rarely see them depicted in fiction.
